March 29 Devotional and Announcements

Message From Pastor Kenny

Dear family and friends,

Before he became a Christian, Lee Strobel described himself as a hardcore atheist. He said, “I lived an immoral, drunken, profane, narcissistic, self-destructive kind of life.” Even though he was an award-winning journalist for the Chicago Tribune, his life was a wreck.

His wife, Leslie, had a Christian friend in their condo building who led her to faith in Christ and she started going to church. Strobel considered Christians to have made up the idea of God to overcome their fear of death, but he figured he didn’t have anything to lose to go to church once with his wife.  The pastor’s sermon he heard that day was, “Basic Christianity” and Strobel left with a lot to think about. One thought he said he had was this: “If this stuff is true, it has huge implications for my life.”

This led him on a fact-finding project that ultimately led him to faith and to proclaiming and defending the gospel.  He is known especially for two books, “The Case for Christ” and “The Case for Faith,” both of which are worth reading if you have not yet done so.

He encourages people to check out the proofs for Christianity, saying, “You owe it to yourself to investigate the evidence.”

He uses a simple outline in his talks that include what he calls the “four E’s” that provide such evidence of Jesus’ resurrection: Execution (“You need to have a body”), Early accounts (including a first-century creed found in 1 Corinthians 15), the Empty tomb and Eyewitnesses.

Strobel said, “I realized it would take more faith for me to remain an atheist than to become a Christian,” and added that his journey wasn’t complete until he accepted for himself “this free gift of forgiveness and eternal life.”

After all this searching (it took him two years), his conclusion was and is that, “Jesus claimed to be the Son of God, and He backed it up by raising from the dead.”

1 Corinthians 15:3-6 talks about 500 people claiming to see Jesus after he died.  Some have said they were just hallucinating.

I heard a psychologist explain (with some hyperbole) that hallucinations are an individual event and so if 500 people have the same hallucination, that’s maybe an even bigger miracle than the resurrection.

Some who doubt the resurrection will say, with no factual support, that Jesus never really died, he only appeared to die, and that his disciples nursed him back to health or he woke up while he was in the tomb. They call this the “swoon theory.”

One person had put this Swoon theory into a “letter to the editor” at a local newspaper. They said their pastor (at a liberal church) had put forth this idea during a Sunday morning sermon and signed it “Bewildered.”  A pastor responded and said this:

“Dear Bewildered, Try this: beat your preacher with a cat o’ nine tails with 39 heavy strokes. Nail him to a cross, hang him out in the sun for six hours, run a spear through his side, embalm him, and then put him in an airless tomb for 36 hours and see how he does.”

Our faith is an historical faith based on the truth.

In preparation for this Sunday, please read Luke 24.
